Sonographic Findings of Klatskin Tumor

Abstract
Klatskin tumor is a cholangiocarcinoma arising at the confluence of the right and left hepatic ducts. We analysed real-time sonographic findings of 43 patients with Klatskin tumor retrospectively at Seoul National University Hospital from January 1985 to October 1988. Sonographic features of Klatskin tumor were dilatation of intrahepatic ducts (100%), normal extrahepatic duct (100%). Non-union and narrowing of intrahepatic bile ducts were observed at bifurcation area (84%) and mass at bifurcation area (23%) respectively. Echogenicities of mass were isoechoic (6 cases), hyperechoic (3 cases) and hypoechoic (1 case). Cholangiographic findings of these patients were dilatation of intrahepatic ducts, normal extrahepatic duct, isolation of right and left intrahepatic ducts, and irregular narrowing of bifurcation area of the bilitary tree, which corresponded to the sonographic findings in each case. These results sugges that sonography is useful not only in detection of obstruction level of the biliary tree but also in diagnosis of Klatskin tumor.
